Nwatamole (25), who hails from Umunyala Mbieri in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state, was paraded on Tuesday by the state NSCDC Commandant, Mr Raji Ibrahim.
Ibrahim said the suspect was arrested on Friday at Heroes Square while packing zinc sheets and other building materials.
He said, “The security guards of the Heroes Square alerted our operatives, who immediately moved to the area and arrested him.”
The commandant said the suspect had confessed to the crime, adding that he packed the materials in order to sell them.
He also said operatives of the corps were poised to ensure that crime and criminalities in the state were brought to the lowest ebb.
He said, “We will also ensure that adequate security and fighting crime in the state for peaceful co-existence of Imo citizen is guaranteed.”
The commandant said that the arrest of Nwatamole would act as a deterrent to many who were into “nefarious activities.”
“No suspect arrested for any crime in the state will go Scot-free. The corps under my watch will not have mercy on criminals,” he added.
The suspect, who confessed to the crime, said, “I packed the materials to sell it so as to get money for my upkeep. I am not an armed robber, but I am into picking of unused and discarded materials to sustain myself.”
He pleaded with the corps officials to have mercy on him, adding that if eventually released, he would not indulge in the act again.
