INEC submit N143bn to NASS panel ahead 2019 election

The Independent National Electoral Commission has submitted an adjusted budget of N143bn for the 2019 general election in line with the directive of the National Assembly Joint Committee on INEC.

The INEC had indicated a preference for an approval of its total budget of N189bn in its interface with the committee.


INEC forwarded its adjusted budget to the national assembly panel on Tuesday.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in a letter to the national assembly, asked the legislators to approve N143bn out of the N189bn through virement from some projects in the 2018 budget while the balance would be captured in the 2019 budget which he would forward before the end of 2018.


Speaking with Journalists at the end of a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, the Chairman, National Assembly Joint Committee on Electoral Matters, Suleiman Nazif, confirmed that INEC had submitted a new budget document reflecting the sum of N143bn as originally requested by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said, “INEC submitted the budget reflecting the N143bn to the secretariat this morning. We are going to consider it clause by clause.”
